The 5th grade students have been learning about the history of African-American music in our country. We started last month with the work song "Old House, Tear it Down" and then they learned how work songs such as "Follow the Drinking Gourd" were used to help slaves escape the underground railroad.
Then they learned about how spirituals served important and different roles during slavery and segregation through the songs "Wade in the Water" and "Oh, Won't You Sit Down".
Next we will be learning about Jazz Music!
Listen as Mrs. Wilson's homeroom performs "Oh, Won't You Sit Down" on Orff instruments and recorders. Solos by Lane Seahorn, Victoria Watkins, Joey Meadows, and Raeden Hunter. Recorder improvisations by Zuleydi Walker, Peyton Hesselgrave, Molly Howard, and Hunter Boyter. "Vocal Saxophone" duet (hehe) by Shelby McIntyre and Josie Shoemaker.
